Now that the hardware to use the Global Positioning Satellite data has become cheaper EM BE Multimedia has tested some of the more popular mapping software on various laptops. We have found that the minimum specifications of the laptop are:- Windows ME/2000/XP, 1ghz processor, 512mb Ram, USB socket, 1gb free hard drive space. When you decide to use your laptop for this purpose you should consider purchasing a mobile power supply for your laptop as most batteries only last around an hour.

Laptop mobile Power supply:- There is a choice of 2 different supply's, a regulated power supply that plugs into cigar lighter socket requiring between 11v and 14v input, and has an adjustable output to deliver between 15v DC and 24v DC at 2.9amps/70w maximum. It usually comes complete with interchangeable socket ends to plug into the laptop. This is suitable for 90% of laptops. The second option is a 150w inverter which plugs into the cigar lighter socket and delivers 220v AC terminating in a 13 amp socket to accept the laptop normal power supply/charger.

GPS Antenna:- A small antenna around the size of a matchbox, complete with installation software, with approximately 1m of cable with a USB plug on the end. The antenna should be placed on top of the dashboard and fitted with small Velcro pad (usually supplied). It should have a clear view of the sky.

Autoroute 2007 has detailed maps of England and Europe with lots of places of interest and has voice directions.

MemoryMap uses O/S  1-50,000 maps and has greater detail but lacks voice directions.
