You should update your virus profiles every day to get full protection from a virus attack. New viruses are being found on the internet every day. Some manufacturers offer free or "beta" copies with updates on the internet, these appear to work well. AVG provides a free program for home use only with updates via the internet. Another free program with updates is InoculateIT personal edition which has received good reviews in computer magazines. If you purchase a retail edition from any of the manufacturers you are usually entitled to updates for the first year from their web sites. Viral attack is becoming a serious problem and once infected it is sometimes to late to recover your files or data and might require a specialist to repair your computer. LINKS
For a while people have suspected that companies that produce anti-virus software are aware of most of the viral attacks before they actually happen, and could release the update to stop them, but don't as they hope to sell more of the full software product. This could just be the usual computer paranoia started by the geeks, but perhaps not. Have a look at the vmyths site, and make up your own mind. It is supposedly run by a man who has links to the CIA. They, the CIA have confirmed this, allegedly, I don't know if this is true or not, draw your on conclusions.
Spam Although Spam is not a virus it causes lots of problems, not only the time taken to download but the content of most spam can cause offence. There is a number of ways to combat this problem but none are 100% effective. Try using other email readers Agent, Pegasus or Mozilla, try different web browsers OffByOne, Opera, or Mozilla, this is not a full list but some suggestions. You can also programs to filter email such as Mailwasher, 0spam is an excellent spam stopper, takes a bit of setting up but is well worth it, and best of all its free. If you are troubled by popups on your browser try using a popup stopper. By using one or more of these suggestions you should be able to manage your mail account better.
